The Rwenzori foothills are home to the hardy Bakonjo, whose hunting shrines are dedicated to a one-legged, one-armed, one-eyed pipe-smoking spirit known as Kalisa, while the Bagisu of the Mount Elgon region are known for their colourful Imbalu ceremony, an individual initiation of young boys to manhood that peaks in activity in and around August of every even numbered year.
The White Nile in Uganda makes the legendary Zambezi look small. The roar of the rapids drift upstream with the gentle breeze and wooden canoes laden with excited locals congregate in the calm waters anxious to see our rafts in action. More than four thousand miles in length, the might Nile is the longest river on earth. The great waterway has played a monumental role in history. It traverses an incredible variety of landscapes, a colourful medley of cultures and since the beginning of time has enthralled civilisations with its power and mystery.
If going on safari isn't quite exciting enough, there are several beautiful spots in Uganda where you can throw yourself off a bridge with a rubber band attached to your ankles. Bungee jumping is an adrenalin sport that was made commercially viable in New Zealand during the mid 1980's and quickly spread around the world, including Africa. The Nile High Bungee has to be one of the most visually impressive bungee jumps in the World! Kites and fish eagles circle the tower as thrill seekers prepare to jump 44 metres directly down to the source of the Nile. |
